Little Oak Campground Bristol, TN

May 25-28, 2021

Our campsite was long & narrow & the lake was about 200 yards behind the tent area.
The lake was beautiful during the day & even more so at night. The colors of the sunsets were very vivid.
I hadn’t planned to have a traditional tent. I’d purchased this SUV tent months ago, well before I’d decided to take this journey. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to use it yet, but I will in the future. I decided to buy a tent & researched some options for a small, backpacker tent. I found one reasonably priced, with good reviews, at WallyWorld. Sadly, good reviews don’t always stand up to the test of time. Neither did this tent. 🥺 It was fine at Horseshoe Point, but then disaster struck.
On our second night there, Maddie & I walked over to the lake to watch the sunset. We were only away from the campsite for about 10-15 minutes. When we returned, I was shocked to find the tent in a crumpled mess! My first thought was that a bear had been there. Unfortunately, one of the two main poles had snapped. With only a short time before it was going to be really dark, I used my best MacGyver skills to reconstruct the framework. With duct tape, bungee cords & a washcloth, I was able to piece it together & still use it for the last 2 nights there. The bottom right photo shows the reconstructed tent. I had to crawl in & out, but it worked, even through a significant thunderstorm. Then I returned it to WW, spiders & all. (I told them about the spiders & wrapped it up in a trash bag for them at the returns desk.)

Next stop: Salthouse Branch in Henry, VA

Hugs from South Carolina 🤗

On May 2, 2021, I departed from Massachusetts in my 2017 Ford Edge (Breezy Blue) with my 13.5 year young pup, Maddie, to fulfill a lifelong dream of a road trip across America. Our departure was delayed by a month, but we're making up for lost time now! My goal is to be out and about for a year.
